The 2013 festival of Russian culture Maslenitsa, will again take place in the heart of London on the 16 March 2013, in the capital’s main square following a whole week of activities happening around the city. This year the theme of the festival will be the ‘New Faces of Russia’; a country which is an economic focal point and which has more recently gathered a great deal of western interest.
In 2013 on the main stage in Trafalgar Square there will be performances by the leading Russian groups representing traditional music from all over Russia as well as the most recognisable contemporary popular artists and groups. During the day the crowds will be entertained by ‘skomorokh’ and there will be a special programme of entertainment for children. Stalls around the square will be selling traditional Russian delicacies and souvenirs.
As is traditional in Russia Maslenitsa will be celebrated for a week running from 11-17 March with events happening across the capital covering different areas including fashion, art, performance, food, drink and literature.
