Ulyana Sergeenko Couture Fall Winter 2012

I have something in common with Ulyana Sergeenko. No, not beauty! but thank you :) The devotion to Russian style.

What is Russian style, anyway? What comes to your mind when you hear these words? There aren’t too many glamorous subjects to play with that would be distinctively Russian. But Ms Sergeenko tricked everybody and didn’t choose Anna Karenina as her inspiration source. Maybe it is because if you take fur out of Anna Karenina’s look there won’t be too much “Russian” left, as urban Russian fashion of that time wasn’t really different from that of the rest of Europe.

Instead, the designer presented chic yet austere looks with sparse detailing, military coats and accessories, lots of black, red and white. All these elements together are screaming the Russian Civil War of 1917-22 (just to remind you, the two sides fighting were the Red Army and the White Army). The soundtrack suggested this subject as well, with the final theme being from the famous Russian movie At Home among Strangers.

Did you like the collection? Let me know in the comments.

Ulyana Sergeenko to Show During Paris Haute Couture Week

Ulyana Sergeenko is set to become the 4th Russian designer to produce haute couture collections (if my count is correct). The show is not on the official schedule but I’m sure it will be a huge deal.

The Haute Couture F/W 2012-13 collection would be Ulyana’s third.

The show will take place on Tuesday, July 3rd at the Théâtre Marigny. In the meantime, enjoy this ethereal photo of Elena Perminova wearing a dress from Ulyana Sergeenko S/S 2012 collection.

Soviet Textiles: Wearable Propaganda

Soviet Textiles: Wearable Propaganda

What can be a more stunning example of fashion and politics going hand in hand?

These textiles were produced in limited quantities during the early years of Soviet Russia by the finest designers of that time. Despite being a manifestation of constructivism they look surprisingly modern and fun to me. I was delighted to see Tata Naka revisiting this wonderful piece of history in their F/W 2002-03 collection. Today, when everybody is crazy about prints, I hope more designers would draw inspiration from this gorgeousness!

Bobkova Fall Winter 2012

I guess there is a virus that goes from one designer to another and makes them create all-black collections from time to time. But on the other hand, what can be more natural than dark colors in winter? We are just too spoiled with all that motley hoopla Vogue feeds us. In two years nobody would wear the hottest prints of today.

Fashions fade, style is forever. I can imagine wearing Bobkova now and ten years from now, because being a grown-up and self-confident person I know what my style is.
