Ukrainian Fashion Week A/W 2013 Day 4 – Bevza, Podolyan

Ukrainian Fashion Week A/W 2013 Day 4 Bevza, Podolyan

Svetlana Bevza sure works in mysterious ways. Look at the runway pictures below, they just scream Japan, right? But in fact the designer was inspired by the even more exotic subject – Italian choreographer Valeria Magli and her performance with life-size dolls, dated back to the 80s. I found zero information about this person online, only these scary pictures, so I’m wondering where Ms Bevza even got her idea? Valeria Magli, in her turn, was inspired by Surrealist artist and photographer Hans Bellmer.

Bevza woman is elegant without trying too hard, and this collection has taken especially nonchalant direction. The tailoring is precise as ever, but the fit has loosened a little bit, resembling that of dolls’ clothes. All in all, it is a well-rounded fall-winter collection that strikes the right balance between glamour and whimsy.

Ukrainian Fashion Week F/W 2013 Day 3 – Litkovskaya, Kamenskayakononova, Domanoff

Ukrainian Fashion Week F/W 2013 Day 3 Litkovskaya, Kamenskayakononova, Domanoff

The 3rd day of UFW brought us collections inspired by the East, West and the combination of both. But however different their subjects might have been, there is one distinctive feature about these collections: they explore female sexuality and identity.

Isn’t it amazing that women look incredibly sexy in, say, a men’s suit or a boyfriend shirt? Lilia Litkovskaya drew her inspiration from two glorious personalities who could make a splash in either – Marlene Dietrich and Patti Smith. Loose coats with strong shoulders and wide pants acknowledged the ’40s-inspired elegance, while chunky boots and leopard print details provided a link to the beatnik era.

Vika Gazinskaya F/W 2013 Lookbook

Vika Gazinskaya F/W 2013 Lookbook

Unleash your inner wild thing!
Everything we know and love about Vika Gazinskaya – “jewelry” appliques, fake fur and architectural frills – comes together in this beautiful Fall 2013 collection. Vika was inspired in part by grand couturiers of the past, and one can definitely see some Balenciaga in voluminous coats and cropped tops. What came as a surprise was the absence of prints, but after all, it is the little black dress that’s timeless, not the “three prints mishmash” one.

Ukrainian Fashion Week A/W 2013 Day 2 – Bobkova, Marchi, Artemklimchuk

Ukrainian Fashion Week A/W 2013 Day 2 Bobkova, Marchi, Artemklimchuk

Ukrainians know and love their cultural heritage, and not a single fashion week goes without collections inspired by Ukrainian history, traditional costume or folklore. In this post it is two out of three.

There was a famous trade route in Ukraine in the 17th – 19th century, used to transport salt from the Black Sea. Marchi collection, called Solena (“salted”) was inspired by this part of Ukrainian history and the role of salt as an understated treasure in our lives.

Rigid fabrics like neoprene and linen in shades of gray and steel blue created the illusion of a salt crust, silhouettes were relaxed and unfussy. Despite the historical references, the collection is excitingly modern, combining three trends we saw on the catwalks earlier this year: stiffness, volume and trapeze skirts.
